Times New Roman font is named Iskoola Pota - BAD!

I started modifying a document containing mostly Times New Roman font, and pretty soon I noticed that Word 2010 was calling the font Iskoola Pota, which I never heard of.

The font looks like TR, but is called Iskoola Pota.  I have highlighted the text and named the font TR, but eventually the name changes back to Iskoola Pota.  I've never used it!  Didn't know it exists!

What's going on and how do I fix it?

God Bless,

Bill

Hope this helps,

According to http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/family.aspx?FID=322, Iskoola Pota is a Sinhala font. Find out more about it at http://www.fonts.com/font/microsoft-corporation/iskoola-pota. In order to use it, you have to have Complex Scripts enabled. The characters in the normal ASCII range (that is, the Basic Latin and Latin-1 Supplement character subsets) do look like TNR, but the upper Unicode range is a lovely script used in Sri Lanka. I can't imagine why Word would default to this font unless the language applied to the text is something other than English; you might check that.

Suz,

I just forced Word to use English.  We'll see what happens next.

Thank you!

I think that Fonts are loaded by the Operating System at Start Up, they are not part of the Word-processor. So, if you have Windows 7 you will have Times New Roman but if you are running Windows 8 you will not (whatever word-processor you use). Nor can you "Add a Font" via the Control Panel in Windows 8. Therefore, you have to use Iskoola Pota if you want your text to look like Times New Roman.

TNR is a "Prorietory Font" and is owned, I believe, by the Times Newspaper. Presumably there is some copyright issue between Microsoft and The Times and, as a result, it is omitted from Windows 8

This is utter nonsense. It is true that TNR is a commercial font, but it is licensed by Microsoft and, according to http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/font.aspx?FMID=1953,  is or has been provided with the following programs: Access 2000, BackOffice Server 4.0, Encarta Virtual Globe 99, Excel 2000, FrontPage 2000, Money 99 Deluxe, Money 99 Standard, Office 2000 Premium, Office 97 Small Business Edition SR2, Outlook 2000, PowerPoint 2000, Publisher 2000, Publisher 98, Windows 2000, Windows 3.1, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 95, Windows 95, Windows 95 Version Upgrade, Windows 95 Version Upgrade, Windows 98, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows NT Terminal Server 4.0, Windows NT Workstation 3.5, Windows NT Workstation 4.0, Windows NT Workstation 4.0 SP4, Windows NT Workstation 4.0 SP5, Windows NT Workstation 4.0b, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows XP SP2, Word 2000, Works 2002, and Works 4.5a. Note that this includes every version of Windows and many versions of Office.
