Table of contents - Headings

I want:

Heading 1 -text

Font size 14, Bold, hanging indent, new page before, double line space after

Heading 2 - “Chapter #”: text

Font size 14, Bold, hanging indent, new page before, double line space after - no huge space between “#:” and the text

Heading 3 - text

Font size 12, Bold, hanging indent, line space after

Heading 3 - text

Font size 12, Bold, indent, hanging indent, line space after

How I want the table of contents to look:

Table of Contents

Heading 1……………………….right align…………15

Heading 2 (Chapter 1: blah blah …………………..20

Heading 3 (indent .25)………………………21

Heading 4 (indent .50)   ……………21

Heading 2  (Chapter 2: Blah blah……………………25

Heading 3…………………………………….25

Heading 3…………………………………….26

Heading 4……………………………27

Heading 3…………………………………….30

ETC!!

The text in the document itself tagged and associated with the Heading designations is fine - all works great.

Table of contents does not work at all.

I have to re-choose tab leaders every time I regenerate the table of contents, even if I’ve changed nothing since the previous regeneration.

Sometimes the TOC2 (which should be Heading 2 or the Chapters) still does not put in the tab leaders (….)and the page number is not right aligned - only sometimes and on only some of the Heading 2 instances. Most of the time it is in the line below the text and indented, i.e.

Chapter 10:      Blah Blah

27

Thanks for your help…i’m stumped and tried many times to figure this out -especially the Table of Contents issues

Part of your problem is likely the hanging indent (and associated tab stop) in the TOC styles. See http://WordFAQs.mvps.org/NumberAlignment2007.htm, which explains the problem. If a tab character in the entry is occurring to the right of where the hanging indent is, then the tab is going to go to the tab stop for the page number, and the page number is then going to run over to the next line. You must have a hanging indent/tab stop in each TOC style in a position where it can be used by that first tab character.

Thanks for your help - I haven't had an opportunity to try your suggestions yet. I have another similar question about tab stops. Can I select the entire document (450 pages) and clear all the tab stops to reset them to the defaults? What happens with the original tab designations in the document? will they conform to the new settings (default)? And what happens to my text that is indented (quotes)?

thanks for your assistance, it is very appreciated.

Julie

You could do this, and clearing tab stops would be useful if you have text imported from WordPerfect, which has manual tab stops (not just the default automatic ones) set every half inch. A better approach, however, would be to modify the paragraph styles to have the tab stops you want.

In my Table of Contents - the first instance of Heading 2 (TOC2) has a left tab stop in it that the other TOC2's do not have. In the document itself - all the Heading 2 text "Chapter 1: Blah Blah" is the same format - no tabs out of place etc. Most of the TOC2 in the table are fine - some just are wacky!!

I have tried to remove that tab - sliding it to the left margin - but it appears the next time I regenerate the Table.

This is a 500 (and growing) page document with 25 Chapters that need to appear correctly and consistently in the table. The Heading 2 is defined as numbered (Chapter 1: etc). The other headings (3 and 4) are not defined as numbered.

Another thing i just noticed - some of the TOC2 in the table are putting a long leader between the "Chapter #: " and the actual text...this is not in the heading designation - they are look exactly the same in the document.

Once again - I appreciate your assistance.

Pay close attention to where the hanging indent and associated tab stop are in the TOC 2 style in relation to the lengths of your chapter numbers. It can well be that Chapter 1 through Chapter 9 are okay and Chapter 10+ then cause problems.

Suzanne -

Thank you for being so helpful - but I still have the same issue. Some of the TOC2 entries are fine - have leaders etc., but others (9 out of 33 chapter headings) have page number not in the right margin...can I send you a pdf of the sample table of contents?

All the Heading 2 designations in the document are consistent and work fine - "Chapter 1: Blah blah" etc. But when they appear in the Table of Contents they are one of two ways - correctly:

"Chapter 1:     Blah Blah...........................................................................27"

Or wrong:

"Chapter 10:     Blah Blah

                          125"

Any more ideas?

Again, thanks,

Julie

Read Suzanne's last post.  The issue will be with the paragraph indentation of the TOC2 Style.
Hope this helps,

See http://WordFAQs.mvps.org/NumberAlignment2007.htm. In this case, the tab character between chapter number and chapter title is overshooting the tab stop because the chapter number is too long, and the tab that should go to the right-aligned tab stop for the page number is wrapping to the next line.
