"Show bookmarks" doesn't display gray square brackets

I know that gray square brackets can be displayed for bookmarks (cross-references).

"Show bookmarks" under "Show document content" on Advanced dialogue is clicked. There are many cross-references in the document, but somehow those square brackets don't show up.

I don't think this matters, but "Always" for "Field shading" under "Show document content" on Advanced dialogue is selected.

Is there anything else I have to click.

I use MS Word 2010, but I've tried this with MS Word 2007 at home as well, but no luck.

The grey brackets show only bookmarks you have inserted manually, not bookmarks created by Word (such as those created when you insert a cross-reference or create a TOC).

You can find those  bookmarks if you go to Insert | Links and click on Bookmark. In the Bookmark dialog, select the radio button for Location and check the box for Hidden bookmarks. The bookmarks Word inserts will be listed, and you can select any one of them and click Go To to see where it is.

Alternatively, if you select a bookmarked cross-reference target before opening the Bookmark dialog, it will be selected.

No, the best you can do is to use Go To in the Bookmarks dialog as above described. The text that is bookmarked will be selected. FWIW, I have been unable in Word 2010 to create the type of cross-reference error you describe, so it may be that Microsoft has made changes that make it more difficult to introduce this type of error.
