Self generating document number, auto update at open

I need to have a document control number on a Word document. I need the number to update each time the file is "saved as" a new document... Can I do this?  How do I do this? I also need the document number to be 3 digits.

HELP!!!!!

It is what I want to do, sort of.  Its a little complicated for this novice. I have a form (Word doc) that needs to be numbered every time it is used so I can track it through our business.  It just needs to have a three digit number starting at 001 and updating every time the file is altered.  Example:

"Patty's File 001", then next time I alter the file it needs to open to "Patty's File 002"... It sounds simple, but I couldn't get a Macro to work and I think it was because of the .txt file associated with the template?  I don't know, I'm very new to this Macro issue.
