Removing special character

While trying to edit a page in Word 2010 I came accrss a special character that begins a new page which cannot be deleted.  The symbol is a small solid square.  How can I delete the symbol?

Double-click on the square bullet to open the Paragraph dialog with the Line and Page Breaks tab displayed. Clear the check box for "Page break before."

That probably indicates that the paragraph is formatted to have a page break before it. You can change that in the Format Paragraph dialog.
