Removing an unwanted last page

Hi

I am trying to remove a blank page from a short letter. I have received the letter template from someone else and can't figure out what they have done.

I have a table in the first page footer. A section break in the second page and then a third unwanted blank page.

If I turn on show hide I can see a return in the final footer.

I have unlinked the footers and tried to remove the footer but can not do this.

Any help would be appreciated

Emma

Hi Luc

Thanks for this Ive tried to run through each process and I can now see that I have a missing header?

So I have header and footer section 1, then header and footer section 2 followed by header and footer section 4?

The person who created the template may have incorrectly used a section break instead of taking advantage of the Different First Page setting for headers and footers. If the section break on the second page is a Next Page break, you may be able to remove the last page by changing the section start type to Continuous (on the Layout tab of the Page Setup dialog), but I've found that in such situations sometimes section breaks can be balky, and in any case the results might be unwanted (you might end up with the first-page footer on the second page). A better approach would be to delete the section break (if it is not needed) and set the template up properly; see http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/LetterheadRibbon.htm#MultiPage.

Hi Suzanne

They may well have done, how do I tell if

The person who created the template may have incorrectly used a section break instead of taking advantage of the Different First Page setting for headers and footers.

I can see a section break next page at the bottom of the first page before the footer

A section break continuous before the second column at the top of the second page but no other breaks and yet I have a current count of 4 sections?

Happy to send the document over to anyone that can help.

Regards

Emma

If there's a Next Page section break at the bottom of the first page, then the letterhead has almost certainly been set up incorrectly. If there are multiple columns on a page, then there will be section breaks before and after the multi-column section. If you like, you can send the document to ssbarnhill@gmail.com.

I have the same exact problem. Can someone help me? I would love to be able to figure out how to do this myself - it seems a mystery...  TIA.

If you send me a copy of a document that exhibits the problem, I will determine the cause and let you know how to rectify the problem.

I wonder if this makes sense - it was the only way I could find to fix it...

I went to Style, Style Guides. selected Show Direct Formatting Guides. Deleted the section. Then selected Show Style Guides, and selected "Normal", and it magically removed the second section. This was not totally a logical sequence for a procedure, IMO. Certainly not intuitive - ? Well maybe slightly, since I was able to figure it out, but I am persistent. :)

The features you describe are not present in Word 2010 (the subject of this post) but apparently are in Word 2011. If you are using Word for Mac, you need to post in the Word for Mac forum.

Those guides look very helpful, by the way; I wish we did have them in Word 2010! (We do have "Keep track of formatting," which displays "formatting" as a pseudo-style in the Styles pane.)
