Problems with heading 4 numbering in Ms word 2010

Hello,

I am working with a document with different chapters and heading up to level 4. The numbering goes fine until heading 4. i get something like :

3.1.1       
3.1.2        
3.1.2.1   
3.1.2.1   
heading 4 seems to be repeating the same numbers rather than go in sequence. I have searched for solutions online but nothing seems to be working. Kindly assist me.

Before you do anything else, click in one of the paragraphs with incorrect numbering and press Ctrl+Q. That alone might correct the problem. If it doesn't:

  1. With the insertion point  in the first Heading 1 paragraph, click the Multilevel List button in the Paragraph group of the Home tab and choose Define New Multilevel List.
  2. In the Define New Multilevel List dialog, select Level 4.
  3. Do all the 1s have grey shading? If the last one does not, then it is not a field number but has been typed. Delete it and use "Number style for this level" to select 1, 2, 3.
