printing outline view in Word 2010

I want to print an outline and have read all the advice on this board and elsewhere, but unsuccessfully. I have the Quick Print button on my toolbar and and have followed the instructions offered in all the various answers about how to do this, and none of them work. The document always prints out in print view.

The only thing I can think of at this point is to do a screen clipping using OneNote and paste it into Word as a graphic--not very satisfactory.

Am I missing something?

You can't use Quick Print. Instead, after you have switched to Outline view, press Ctrl+P to show the Print Preview. Then click the Print button. (Note that the preview does not reflect an actual printout of Outline view.)

Didn't work. I did exactly what you said but got the full document. It's odd that such contradictory advice is given for this question and each solution seems to work for some people. But alas, not for me.

My understanding has always been that you could only use Quick Print (FilePrintDefault), while in Outline view, in order to print an outline.

That is what most of the answers to my question say, but it didn't work for me, and I can't figure out why.

I just tested again and, using Ctrl+P, I could print a collapsed outline to PDF. For printing on paper, I have to wait until I get to work tomorrow.

I tried that, but the PDF came out as the full doc. I also tried 'save as' pdf, same result. I also tried using save & send as well as both my PDF printers. Same result in all cases. I collapsed the outline to show the 4 heading levels but not body text.

I'm not surprised that Save As didn't work, but printing should definitely work. Strange. I'll do some more testing when I get the chance.

Well, I got it to work using ctrl-P and my NitroPro addin. But the resulting pdf included the notes, which were left out of the outline, and worse the PDF includes the page breaks between chapters, so I have one chapter title and its subheadings on each page. Not very useful.

I do appreciate your help, though.

Thanks for the follow-up. It appears that different printer drivers behave differently. :-(

Got an email asking me to reply to say whether the question was answered, and the answer seems to be that there is no answer. That is, no way for me to print the outline from Word so it's usable. What I did was use OneNote to make screen clippings which I then put together and made into a pdf.
