overtype mode

I see the question as having been previously asked, but I don't find an adequate answer. Why am I unable (sometimes) to use overtype mode via the insert key. I know that it is to be turned on under options--advanced, but while "use the insert key" is checked, its subcategory of "use overtype mode" is ghosted. Other times I can. Why. Don't mean to be a whiner, but this was never an issue in Word Perfect.

If you have enabled the option to use the Insert key to toggle between Insert and Overtype, why would you bother going to the Options dialog (at least three mouse clicks) to check that box in order to use Overtype mode?

What I have found, however, is that the Insert key cannot be used to turn on Overtype mode (and the "Use overtype mode" check box is disabled) when Track Changes is on.

I am now more confused than ever. I have in fact enabled the option to use the insert key (under file/options/advanced, but the overtype option underneath is disabled (ghosted) and there is of course no overtyping. What am I missing?

(In track changes under review, I see no option NOT to track changes and in fact I am not tracking changes, having marked this as final. That info because someone noted that as an issue. Why is this SO complicated.?

On the Review tab, in the Tracking group, the Track Changes button is a "split button." The top part turns Track Changes on and off (and indicates the status by being blue for off or yellow for on). The bottom part opens a menu that allows you to access the Tracking Options. If you want an indicator that will show whether Track Changes is on or off even when the Review tab is not displayed, right-click on the status bar and click on Track Changes. The status bar indicator will clearly show "Track Changes: On" or "Track Changes: Off" and can be toggled with a click.
