How to create a new Word 2010 template with function

Am using Word 2010.  Want to create a NEW template that will have the file name in the footer.  Yes, I know how to create a footer, then insert the file name function.  But what I really want is a brand new Word 2010 template that contains the function f(n) in the footer. Just like the template normal.dot contains my selections for font and size when opened as a new document.  Have tried numerous suggestions but I always seem to end up with the file name "document #.doc" in teh footer instead of teh new, saved  file name.   Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

After saving the template, when you open a new doc based on this template, save it with the new doc name and then you have to right click on the field and choose "Update Field"  This will insert your new saved file name.

I forgot to mention I used Quick Parts to insert the file name in the footer.

I amusing Word 2010.  Your MS suggestion is for 2003 and 2007.  Didn't work for me.

You would need to update the field in the footer for it to display the new filename.  The article for which Suzanne gave the link applies to all versions of Word after 2002.


It contains methods of updating the field that are applicable to 2010 as well.

After you have created a new document based on your template, save the file to the new name, do a Print Preview and then save it again.
