Fonts display in font pop-up box and text do not match

The way the typeface appears in the body of a word 2010 doc text doesn't look anything like what it's supposed to. Be it Times New Roman, Calibri, Arial Narrow, some other styles too, the letters aren't trim, fine and streamlined as they appear in the font pop-up box sample. Instead they are emphasised as if they have been set in bold face. Not quite but almost. That's with the bold box unchecked. Sometimes the typeface reverts to what it's supposed to be like mid-text and stays there. Restoring Microsoft Word to its factory settings hasn't resolved the problem. Any ideas?

Thank you!
Assuming you have the Regular variantof these fonts installed, this sounds like a display issue. Perhaps you need to disable hardware acceleration or download a new display driver.

I haven't knowingly fiddled with the fonts. They must still be as they were when the program was bought and installed. Have tried disabling hardware acceleration, but didn't work. As for replacing the display driver, I run a search for driver software and it's up-to-date. My all-things-PC knowledge is next to non-existing and so I'd rather not start playing around with the software.

TVM all the same!

It may have something to do with font smoothing or antialiasing (options in Control Panel | Display IIRC). Whenever I switch to a different monitor/OS, it takes me a while to get used to the text display, which always seems inferior to what I had before. The bottom line is that, no matter how terrible it looks onscreen, as long as it prints correctly and is legible enough onscreen to be edited, it's not a fatal error. You'll probably find that some fonts display better than others, and that changing the Zoom ratio slightly can make a big difference.
