Endnote sequence out of order

I have been creating endnotes in Word 2010. Suddenly, my endnote numbers jumped from 15 to 17. It won't let me change it to 16. I don't already have a 17th endnote.
Answer
Answer
  1. At the bottom of the vertical scroll bar, there is a pair of double-arrow buttons with a round button between them. Click the round Select Browse Object button.
  2. In the flyout gallery, mouse over the buttons until you find Browse by Endnote and click it.
  3. Place the insertion point at endnote 15 and click the bottom arrow button (Next Endnote).
  4. Does the insertion point stop where there is no visible endnote reference?
  5. If so, is an endnote reference revealed if you display Hidden text (Ctrl+*)? If so, you can delete it.
  6. If not, try selecting from one character before to one character after the insertion point and deleting the selection; if this clears the problem, retype the visible characters you deleted.
