Endnote hyperlink (to exterior site) has included the paragraph symbol in the hyperlink formatting! Complex endnotes need help!

Hello again Brilliants,

Suzanne? I am back.... ....

The special (to OneNote page) hyperlink jumps right over an intervening regular hyperlink (to an exterior web page) and is part of the first hyperlink! Help!!! Here is a picture:

I had been trying to make the Paragraph symbol return to its natural state, just like all the others (over 170 now...), but if I do it removes the formatting of the first (light blue) hyperlink.  Obviously the light blue is continuing in the background... and is affected by my effort at changing Para to normal (and doing many other twisted things) but why?

Solve one problem, find another...

Thanks for your help!

Liah

I'm not clear from your screen shot and description exactly what's going on, but I suspect that the content of your hyperlink text and the underlying HYPERLINK field may be at odds. You can have display text that is entirely different from the hyperlink URL, and you can remove the Hyperlink character style from the hyperlink without disabling the link itself. Hmmmm... yes I have removed the hyperlink style and retained the hyperlink function...

I will go read the article that you posted before I attempt a long drawn-out explanation.

Whatever is going on is rather odd, though.

Thank you for your help, as always,

Liah

P.S. - Wow - you wrote that! I am definitely talking to the right person! - Still have to study it ...

I have read your excellent article, and I am sure I will get more out of it in the future. But I seem to be doing something specifically wrong. These are two separate hyperlinks. The first one is linked to a OneNote page (for my internal reference). The second is to an external site and is exactly what it looks like.

ON - NY Mag

http://nymag.com/

The [PP]aragraph symbol remains part of the hyperlink of "ON - NY Mag" and is carrying over, so that anything after it is also defined as part of that first hyperlink.  (The lighter blue is visible under the darker blue of the hyperlink).

If I try to change the [PP] symbol back to Endnote Plain Text then it also eliminates the hyperlink under "ON - NY Mag". I have never had a [PP] symbol become part of a hyperlink!

In general, I have place an unformatted space between the two hyperlinks, so as to give myself some formatting room (cursor moves, etc.). Up until now I have had little problem, although I have had to repeat the application of formatting on the OneNote2010 little blue links more recently.

Also, the previous 170 endnotes seem unaffected by this issue?!?

I will continue experimenting, and perhaps I will find an answer, eventually. But if you have any leads or suggestions, I would be much less frustrated and testy. As it is, I am .... :o(

Thanks for all your help,

Liah

If you press Alt+F9, what is the syntax of the HYPERLINK field codes? I'm wondering if you've gotten one hyperlink nested inside the other. What do you see in the Edit Hyperlink dialog? Was the content of the OneNote page pasted from http://nymag.com

Is it possible that a certain website link could corrupt formatting?

Suzanne, I have more homework to do and I do not want to waste your time. I think your idea of "nesting" is correct. I need to find another example. So far the only example is this character: You might find his research interesting - tribal styles as insignia.

This website was flashing and skipping like crazy when I copied the information (backing up all references in case of link-loss). Perhaps that has something to do with this problem.

Here is an example of the problem:

Thank you for your time. I will check in later tonight.

Yes, I did the Alt F9 and found all sorts of wonders. None of which included a high-lighted [PP] symbol. Here is an oddity:

Without seeing the HYPERLINK field code, it's really very difficult to say anything more.

If you would just post the field code(s), either typed or as a screen shot, we could probably help you.

I thought I had done so, above. Did I misunderstand the directions in your article? Perhaps the size was too small? Or perhaps I need to give you some other sort of code? Pardon my stupidity!

I will post what I have, in order, so you may be able to point me the right way:

The original Footnote Hyperlink that I altered to reflect the fact that I was using Endnotes:

The working Footnote Hypertext still in place in this document (two Endnotes back).

What F9 shows of that endnote code (I assume this is what you mean).

The modified Endnote Hyperlink that I altered to reflect the fact that I was using Endnotes:

What Endnote 166 looks like right now (on two separate lines).

What F9 shows of that endnote code.

NY Mag has been moved, temporarily... it is currently irrelevant.

Suzanne, I hope I am actually giving you what you need! Thank you again.

Liah

P.S. "ON - " refers to OneNote link.

The only part that is actually relevant to my inquiry is your last screen shot, which shows the HYPERLINK field codes in your endnote. It does appear that you have two separate HYPERLINK field codes here. What doesn't appear is that you have any space or a line break between them, which I would suggest adding.

It would appear that you have defined Footnote Hyperlink and Endnote Hyperlink as paragraph styles. Why? Since the Hyperlink character style is automatically applied to hyperlinks, it would seem more useful to either modify that or create another character style based on it, especially if you are wanting your hyperlinks to be part of the note paragraph.

And yes, you did post the field code in an earlier screen shot. I was distracted by the Style pane. My apologies for sidetracking the discussion!
