Editing a cross reference to a figure in word

Hy there,

I'm using cross references in word to the figures that I have in my document. I'm first adding a caption to the figure and then selecting the reference style 'Figures' and showing only Figure x.x. So far so good....

But I noticed one thing, when reading the text (at pdf for example) and I click on the 'hyperlink'/cross reference text, the cross reference always works in a way that the figure caption shows up on the first line of the document, which is obviously what we referenced, but the thing is, the figure is above the caption and this way, will never pop/show up together with the caption.... Having the reader always to scroll the page up to see the figure...

So my question is exactly if there's a way for me to change the selected page area where the cross reference goes to. For example, if the cross reference showed the caption at the bottom of the page, both the caption and figure would be visible.

Thanks in advance. Best regards,

The cross reference is always to the caption rather than to the image which is why we see this behaviour.

The easy fix is to position the caption above the figure.

A harder waymight work along the following lines...

When you reach a point in the document preparation that the caption numbers have stopped changing, lock each of the cross-reference fields and then cut each of the graphics (including the paragraph mark) and paste each one into the start of the caption. This will put the graphic inside the hidden bookmark that is used by the cross-reference to provide the link anchor and text content. If the cross-references were then updated they would each include the graphic which is why you need to lock them before you do this step.

This could be automated with a macro very easily.

You could also post-process the PDF to relocate the links to the preferred location.

Thanks for your tips. The thing is that the caption usually goes bellow the figure, and since I'm writing my thesis, I have to make it that way...

What I'm doing is to add a second caption with a different name, like Illustration, and put it above the figure. Then I'm choosing to exclude the name of the caption, and write Figure before the x.x (caption number) by myself.  Then instead of using the cross reference to the caption figure, I use the caption of Illustration.
So in the end when I'm done, all I have to do is to choose a white color for those secondary’s captions so that they don't appear at the document text... This actually works for me, but I was trying to find a better option...

Best regards

Another approach would be to bookmark the figure itself and insert a cross-reference to the bookmark. Unfortunately, that cross-reference would have to be to the page number rather than the figure number. But they hyperlink would go to the figure rather than the caption.
