There is not even a good manual way to do it. In cases where it is necessary to replicate handwritten or typed material using ditto marks, the best you can do is insert tab stops at the requisite locations in each line and put the ditto marks (straight quotes)
there. When I faced such a situation, I ended up with this:
Yesterday, I received 14 more letters:
V mail from Uncle Felix – 12 Aug
[V mail from][1] Grandmother – 9 Sep
[V mail from] Aunt Luella – 20 Sep
Air [mail from] Mother – 25 Aug
Free [mail from] Cpl Dean Conrad – 28 Aug
Free [mail from] 23d MRU – 31 Aug
Air [mail from] Luella – 18 Sep
Air [mail from] your mother – 31 Aug
Air [mail from] Virginia – 27 Aug
Air [mail from] Virginia – 1 Sep
Air [mail from] Virginia – 30 Aug
Air [mail from] Virginia – 15 Sep
Air [mail from] Virginia – 18 Sep
Air [mail from] Grandmother – 2 Sep
[1]No attempt has been made to reproduce Tom’s ditto marks—or rather, an
attempt was made and given up as impractical!
