Default font not memorised in template normal.dotm

Hi

My normal.dotm settings are to start a Word document with Arial 11 black by default and yet regularly it changes for Calibri bold 10. I keep on resetting those formattings and saving for ALL documents in Normal.dotm but it still happened many times a day.

Rather than to set the default settings from a document, I opened the normal.dotm, did those corrections, saved and it still happens.

Any suggestion please??? It is so annoying!!

Not sure if it is relevant but my job is to mark papers saved in Word via internet by many different learners. Could there be some conflicts between their settings and mine??

With my thanks for your help.

Pascale

Are you sure that you opened the correct Normal.dotm? To make sure, you can try a line of macro code as follows. From within Word, press Alt+F11 and then Ctrl+G to activate the Immediate window in the Visual Basic Editor. Type

NormalTemplate.OpenAsDocument

and press Enter. Close the Visual Basic Editor. You should now see a window whose title bar says Normal (or Normal.dotm). Change the default font as you would from a document, save and close Normal. Restart Word.

If you are editing existing documents, the default font for new documents in your copy of Word is irrelevant; the default font in the document you're editing is the one that is relevant.

Indeed, as Suzanne wrote, changing the defaults will only apply to future documents based on the Normal template.

Hi Stefan

Thank you for your answer. Yes I am sure that I had the correct Normal.dotm. But I had a real difficult time finding it so your idea is really handy. I tried and it worked of course.

It does not resolve my problem but I learnt something, thank you.

So from the answers I got, it is obviously not a problem of normal.dotm so I will phrase my question differently: When I mark papers (created with Word 10), I always start my feedback with the date of the marking so I initially copy it once and then paste it each time I enter a comment.

After 4 or 5 times, it suddenly starts pasting it using Calibri bold 10.

Is there ANY way to change/stop that please?

Thank you for your time.

To change the formatting of comment text, modify the Comment Text and Balloon Text style. Here's one way: Press Ctrl+Shift+S to display the Apply Styles pane. Type in a style name and then click Modify. Make the desired changes. When you are done, click OK. (Changes apply to the current document only.)

Hello Stefan

Thanks for this idea. I think I did not phrase my problem as well as I could have done. There are 2 different situations:

1/ when I open a new document on my computer which should open in Arial 11 regular.

And I am sorry to say that amending the normal.dotm to automatically open word docs with Arial 11 regular does not seem to work all the times, sometimes it does sometimes it does not and then open in Calibri 10 bold and I don't know why.

2/ when I amend a document sent to me by someone else.

This is when I paste in an existing paragraph the date. Even though I first typed it as Arial 11 and copied it, after 4 or 5 time of pasting it, it changes to Calibri. Again no idea why!

Because this date is inserted within an existing paragraph (with different formatting in terms of alignment, colour and bullet points), creating a style does not work in this case (good idea though) or I will have to create too many to be worth it.

If you had any other solutions, it would be great. In any case thank you for your time and help.

Pascale

1. Which are the specific steps when you change the font? You should do it by clicking the Set as Default button, even after you opened the Normal template. When prompted you can choose to change the defaults in the active document—assuming that the active file is the Normal template open as a document.

2. This suggests that the document that you are editing wasn't correctly formatted (by the original creator). Pressing Enter, for one thing, may revert to the settings of the underlying style. Try pasting in the date as "Unformatted Text."

1/ I did 2 different things:

- opened normal.dotm,

- selected relevant font/size/effects

- saved and closed

and also

when opening a new doc or amending an existing one and the font is calibri 10 bold, I go to:

- font section of the ribbon,

- select Arial 11 regular

- click on bottom button SET AS DEFAULT

- select ALL DOCUMENTS BASED ON NORMAL TEMPLATE .DOTM

- save the document

Should I have done it differently?

2/ will try, thank you.
