Can't open doc - says moved, renamed or deleted

I am trying to open a document in Word but a dialogue box keeps telling me:
"Sorry, we couldn't find your file.  Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?"
It then states the correct name of the document and where I filed it.
I am using Windows 8

Hello,

1. Does the issue occurs with specific document or with all the saved documents in the Computer?

2. Where is the file located in the Computer?

3. Are you trying to open the document from the recent list within the Word application?

Reply with required details and we would be happy to assist.

Thank you.

No, this is just a file I've created and saved on my C: drive in My document folder.  It happens in Excel and Word 2013.

No, because this is a file I've created and saved on my hard drive in My Documents folder and a flash drive.  It happens in Excel and Word 2013.  It gives me this message when I'm trying to open it from my recent documents or recent worksheet.

I'm assuming you have checked that the flash drive is actually connected when you try to access the file?

Can you open the files if you navigate to the relevant folders in Windows Explorer?

Yes, the flash drive is connected.  I just want to be able to open up my document from the list of recent documents or worksheets without have to find it on the hard drive path.  I can open the document by browsing through the different file folders, but it's a pain and I would like to be able to access it from recent documents or worksheets list.
