all my old 2010 office works documents have been move to DOCX files. How do I retrieve them

all my old microsoft word 2010 files have been moved to DOCX files.  I tried system restore and that didn't bring them back.  How do I retrieve them?

Were these documents created in Works or in Word 2010? Since .docx is the default file extension for Word 2010, this should not be surprising. If these were .doc files created in an older version, have they actually acquired a different file extension or just a different icon, indicating that they will be opened by Word 2010?

I've been using .doc automatically ever since I've had this computer (Windows 7 2010) and today they just all changed and I don't know why.  I tried many of the suggestions from the community and the one that finally worked was going to control panel and Programs and features and changing it there.  Don't know why it was in doc from the beginning and out of the blue changed to DOCX.  Wasted my whole evening figuring it out.  I'm not an expert in computers, but since I've had this one, I've learned a lot!
