How can I set up word 2007 to NOT change font to MS Mincho whenever I type a zodiac symbol?

Whenever I type any of the zodiac symbols the font is changed to MS Mincho and I have to change it back. Even in my web browser these symbols are forced to be rendered as MS Mincho. I particularly dislike the way these characters look in MS Mincho and would like to prevent MS Mincho from ever being a usable font, however I can't delete it because it's a "Microsoft Protected Font"

So can you please help me out and let me know how to remove it or completely disable it? Because it doesn't display the zodiac symbols properly and they are being forced to display in MS Mincho.

Not all fonts include a full range of Unicode characters and Word substitutes MS Mincho when characters are missing in your current font. You should use a complete Unicode font that does include these symbols.

Even when I am using a font that includes these characters, it is overwritten

This also occurs in my web browsers

I am using Windows Technical Preview, could this be a bug with it?

It would be useful to know which font or fonts are being used to type the characters, before they're displayed in MS Mincho.

I've found only three fonts that include the zodiac symbols: Arial Unicode MS, MS Mincho, and Wingdings. Even Lucida Sans Unicode doesn't include them. I’ll rule out Wingdings because it puts the zodiac signs in a different range of character numbers than do the other two. Thus I’ll guess that you were entering the symbols in Arial Unicode MS, but that font isn't properly installed, so Mincho is substituted.

The page at http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/font.aspx?FMID=1081 —although it isn't always reliable—indicates that Arial Unicode MS ships with Office 2007 but not with any version of Windows. I believe that's one of the “Additional Fonts” that have to be selected in the Office installer's Custom setup in order to install. As you say your OS is Windows 10 Tech Preview, maybe Office 2007 wasn't completely installed there. That might also account for the substitution in the web browsers on your computer; does displaying the same web page in any browser on another computer have the problem?

My main suggestion would be to try uninstalling and reinstalling the font that you're trying to use, whether it's Arial Unicode MS or something else. As a workaround, use the characters from Wingdings instead; that's an old font that comes with all versions of Windows and should be available everywhere.

From your screen shot, it would appear that the symbols in Wingdings are similar to the ones in MS Mincho, which the OP doesn't care for. The differences among the three (especially toward the end) are striking.

This does not occur when using Mozilla Firefox, however the symbols are colored in Firefox (which is equally unappealing), however I believe this has to do with the Firefox browser itself. Microsoft IE is also displaying in Mincho. I believe that your suggestion that Microsoft Office wasn't rendered as a complete installation after Windows Tech Preview was installed seems likely. I will probably reinstall the fonts I would prefer the use of. Thank you all for your help and support ☺

The Zodiac signs can be inserted through their Unicode number from Alt+9800 to Alt+9811.

Now from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_typefaces_included_with_Microsoft_Windows, it would appear that the fonts which include the Japanese characters are the only ones which also include the Zodiac signs (with the “WingDings” font as a special exception). These are the “Meiryo”, “Meiryo UI”, “MS Gothic”,  “MS PGothic”, “MS Mincho”, “MS PMincho”, and “MS UI Gothic” fonts. All are automatically installed in Windows 7 and 8 with the support for Asian languages.

HTH.

As Jay Freedman pointed out, these characters are also present in Arial Unicode MS, which many users do have installed.

As I understand things, "Arial Unicode MS" is only installed through MS Word 2007. Are there so many users still using Word 2007?

Of course, there are non-official versions of "Arial Unicode MS" available on the Web. But I assume these copies are illegal.

It does appear to have been deprecated (I was unaware of this). According to http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/font.aspx?FMID=1081, it was supplied with Access 2000, Excel 2000, Excel 2007, FrontPage 2000, Office 2000 Premium, Office 2007, Office 2007 Home-Student Edition, Office 2007 Professional Edition, Office 2007 Standard Edition, Office 2010, Office Professional Edition 2003, Outlook 2000, Outlook 2007, PowerPoint 2000, PowerPoint 2007, Publisher 2000, Publisher 2007, Windows Small Business Server 2003, Word 2000, Word 2007, so Office 2007 does seem to be the most recent Office product that included it, and it was never included with Windows (except Small Business Server 2003).
