footer text alignment

Can someone please help me top justify text in a footer? When I assigned page number to the left most section of a standard 3 section footer, the text jumped to the top. That is good! However I can't get any of the other text to do the same. All paragraph info is identical. I'm at a loss. Thank you, Keith

A convoluted work around, I deleted the all the spaces before BTI which brought the page number down to the level of the BTI and shoved the BTI next to the 4. Then I added a tab and moved it to center the segment again. Then in the footer edit mode, design tab, position, footer from bottom, raised all three segments back to the top. What a zoo. I hope someone has a straight forward approach.

The likelihood is that you actually have a paragraph break between the first and second lines. Displaying nonprinting characters (Ctrl+*) should help in troubleshooting.

Thanks for the reply. Ctrl+* does nothing on my system.

edit: for follow up, while Ctrl+* does nothing on my system (says it should on the dropdown), navigation to home, paragraph, ¶. What this did reveal, is the paragraph mark that when deleted did provide the desired results.

What this also revealed is the default tab symbols used, but with no tab stops visible on the ruler. So, again, there are hidden things that control the display of text that make it difficult to quickly learn what to do.

Ok, here's the run down, "bug report" if you will:

Insert standard 3 column footer (tab stops are displayed), replace first [Type text] with page 1 of 1 at current position. Word places the text up under the footer top edge and adds a paragraph mark. Tab stops not present on the newly created paragraph, but are present on the original paragraph. Delete the first paragraph mark (not easy to do btw), now remaining  2 [Type text] aligned under the top edge of the footer, but now without any tab stops. There is no way to view control of the centered and right positioned [Type text]. (they stay put, just no tab stops, so if a tab is deleted, the new one doesn't behave like the old one.) I'd love to know what is keeping the text in position without a tab stop.

Thanks for your feedback.

If you've used one of the Footer building blocks, it probably contains content controls aligned with alignment tabs. If you prefer to format your footer without "help" from Word, just double-click in the header area to open the header, then switch to the footer and type directly in it.
