abbreviations with auto appended period/fullstop

Can someone please tell me where can I change the default so that when I type an abbreviation Word will NOT put a period/fullstop at the end? thanks.

What abbreviations? Are these listed as AutoCorrect entries? This is not something Word does by default.

Hi Suzanne, thanks for your reply.

I mean when I type "approx" I get it auto changed to "approx."

and "bldg" to "Bldg.", etc

I checked autocorrect but there are no entries for "approx", "bldg", etc

That happens at my workplace which is using MS Office Prof Plus 2010

(I think I mistakenly thought it was 2007) running on Win 7.

At home where I use Mac osx maverick running Office 2011 I don't get this (rather annoying) thing happening to me.

thanks for your help.

Without AutoCorrect entries specific to the abbreviations, this should not occur.

This is not a function of off-the-shelf Word, in any version.

It might be an Add-In, but it would be a fairly unusual and powerful one.

I am assuming that you are not seeing these full stops after every word you type in a sentence.

I agree with Charles that, absent AutoCorrect entries, I can't think of any way this could be happening. What I do see is that both "approx." and "bldg." are included in the AutoCorrect Exceptions (First Letter). I wonder if that is relevant.

I think it is quite likely that one of the Bloomberg add-ins or the Measurement Converter add-in might be the source of the behaviour.  Try starting Word in Safe Mode (Hold down the CTRL key while starting Word) and see if the issue still occurs.  If it does, that would confirm that it is one of the addins and the trick then is the find which one.
Hope this helps,
