In word 2010, I can't drag, drop or paste where I want; are there settings I need to change?

In word 2010, when I try to drag, drop or paste text in my document, I can only drop or paste at what seems to be predetermined places in the document like at the end of sentences, left side of the text or blank space, and what seems to be tab points. Also, I can only drop or drag text so far down in the document. Are there settings in the file options box that cause this and need to be changed or is there a problem with my word 2010 program?

Does it happen with one particular Word file or with all Word files?

Are you trying to insert text with picture or only the text?

Rename the Normal.dat and check if it works fine.

It would appear that you do have drag-and-drop text editing enabled (File | Options | Advanced: Editing options). You might look at the "Smart cut and paste" settings in the next section of Advanced options to see if anything appears relevant, but mine are left at the default, and I don't have the problems you describe. You won't be able to drag text beyond the current end of the document, but you should be able to place it anywhere that there is already text.

If you have "Click and type" enabled under "Editing options," I'd advise disabling it, but I can't see that having it enabled makes any difference in dragging and dropping text.

I have had the same problem and disabling "Click and Type" enabled the drag and drop.

Thanks!

This drove me nutso until I noticed it only occurred when i had the Find and Replace dialog box open that allowed me to move to a specified page, find and replace something. It's the box that opens from clicking on the lower left corner of Word 2010. If it's open, I can't drag and drop. When it's closed, all works fine. Hooray!

Try closing the Find and Replace dialog box, if it's open. That worked for me. :)

It also happens if you have the cross reference dialogue box open!  What I don't understand is why, if this feature is being deliberately disabled while the dialogue boxes are open, it can't give you a warning to let you  know why?

I have had problems dragging and dropping graphics from one Word file to another. It is impossible to control the landing position of the graphic, and sometimes it fails to land anywhere in the document.

I fixed it by disabling 'Enable Click and Type', but that is only effective if the target document is a doc file. It has no effect on the problem if it is a docx file.

This is in Word 2010.

That was an excellent clue. I did not have the Find and Replace open but I did have the Insert Reference dialog open. As soon as I closed it, I got my drag-and-drop back. It seems to be a pervasive bug in Word with all these type of Dialog Windows. Thanks.
