Hard Disk Drive Won't Recognize

I just bought my Xbox 360 S two weeks ago and it won't recognize the internal hard disk drive inside.  I've tried removing and reattaching the drive and it still won't recognize it.

I'm hoping that I can take it back to the store and have them fix it since I have a two year warranty on it however I would like to know if everything on the hard drive will get erased because I had a lot of game DC's, movies, and music stored in it.  I don't want it getting erased because I never had the chance to back them up since I've only had it for two weeks.

Are you using the official MS brand 250Gb hard drive? If not then that would be your issue.

Do you have a friend that has the slim HDD, If so see if you can borrow it for a moment and plug it into your xbox. This basically narrows down to weather its your Hard drive or the Hard drive plugins on the inside of the console

OK so I've asked all my friends who had an Xbox 360 and apparently I'm the only one that has the new slim version.

I'm getting really frustrated here because I've only had this for two weeks and it goes down on me for no reason (I never dropped my Xbox 360, always put it in room temperature, etc).

On top of that, I've got a bunch of updates, themes, downloadable content, movies, and game saves saved it in that hard drive and I don't know whether I'm going to be able to get all those back.

Never mind.  I had to buy another drive for my system and it actually worked.  I had to waste another $130 just to get another damn hard drive.

Is there any way I can prevent this from happening again?  I have no clue what I did wrong since I've been taking real good care of my system.  I've always kept it well ventilated.  I laid the system down just so it wouldn't fall.  I've never even took out the hard drive that was inside the system ever since I bought it.

Any ideas as to what caused the hard drive to fail like that?

All HDDs that come with consoles as part of the SKU are covered by the console warranty. All you had to do was open a service request with XBOX support.
Is there any way I can prevent this from happening again?
No. HDDs are mechanical devices. They all have a risk of failure.
Any ideas as to what caused the hard drive to fail like that?
It's normal bell curve infant mortality.
