connect to live through laptop

Hey everyone.  I've been scouring the internet for a solution to my problem but have been unable to get this to work.  So far what I have done is connect my laptop to the xbox.  Tried to bridge the connection but i just lose connectivity to the laptop and live doesn't work.  The other option - ICS - also does not work.  I have tried manually assigning an ip, and leaving the settings as automatic to no avail.  Could anyone help me connect to xbox live via my laptop? This seems incredibly complicated and I'm having no luck.

modem brand: sb5100

router: linksys wrt4g

network connection type wired

US PA

s UPnP Enabled? don't know

Is NAT Type Open? don't know

Any Error Codes you encounter: none

What type of internet do you have? Cable

Who is your ISP(Internet Service Provider)? service electric

When you run "Test Xbox LIVE connection" what is the exact message shown on screen? just says "test failed" no explanation why or error code

When that test fails - as long as it's running the firmware programmed by microsoft - it will give you a message that says to hit more info for a description of the problem; on this screen you will want to look at the first couple lines that show up at the top of the message.

It says can't obtain ip address from router or modem
