Regarding Windows 8 SL 64 bit OS

Hi,

I asked for Windows 8 OS for my desktop. The retailer gave me OS titled as Windows 8 SL 64-bit. I'm from India.

What does this SL mean? How does this differ from the other versions of Win 8?

I searched through Microsoft.com for Win 8 SL; but couldn't find any info.

Please advise. Thank you

Sounds like it is a System Builder License.

"Can I transfer the software to another computer or user? You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement. To make that transfer, you must transfer the original media, the certificate of authenticity, the product key and the proof of purchase directly to that other person, without retaining any copies of the software. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the media that the software came on to transfer the software. Anytime you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer. You may not transfer the software to share licenses between computers. You may transfer Get Genuine Windows software, Pro Pack or Media Center Pack software only together with the licensed computer."

Yes. It's System Builder Licence and SL stands for Single Language.

From this page, http://personaluselicense.windows.com/en-US/default.aspx

I can see there are 5 versions of Windows 8 packages available

1. Windows 8 (OEM Version)

2. Windows 8  Single Language (OEM Version)

3. Windows 8 N (OEM Version)

4. Windows 8 Pro (OEM Version)

5. Windows 8 Pro N (OEM Version)

So, I got to use Win 8 SL version. As far as the usage, I don't see any differences between Win 8 and Win 8 SL variants.

Could someone throw some light on how these versions differ among themselves? Moreover, Microsoft Windows page doesn't talk about these versions; It talks only about Win 8 and Win 8 Pro and Win RT.

Regards,

Gnana N.

OK, but tell me please if this means you can only use Russian as the interface language or you may use English too? And are there any other restrictions? Is this Windows 8 without the Pro?

Thanks, this is extremely hard to find information, Microsoft is hiding it well, or not telling it at all online.

As far as I know, if your interface language is Russian, you need to go with that only... I think, with SL version you can't upgrade to next version of Windows in future. And, SL versions are released in emerging/developing markets.

With Windows 8, the licence is different and tricky.

This is what Microsoft says, "We do not sell our software or your copy of it – we only license it."

And, it's like using full functions of the software; no need to worry about this.

Win 8 and Win 8 Pro are different versions; you need to get what you want.

Yes the OS can only be used in russain, but to type we can use english.Yes there are may restrictions like you don't get windows office in SL version, you can't upgrade to any other windows 8 version you can only have a clean install after buying the windows 8 dvd.
I have been all over internet for this and each day my hatred toward microsoft grows,i can't find any information and reply from microsoft has yielded no answers.
People who have bought a windows 7 computer between june and december caan upgrade to windows 8 with 16$ but we who have bought a windows 8 SL laptop(mine already 900$) have to spend another 70$ to het windows 8,this is really bad.

Guys,

SL means Single Language but also SL is similar to WIN & Home Basic and can be used for single user, it has limitation that it cant be used in Networked environment, so only can be used as home user.

I think that if you download Windows 8 (regular version) that you can use a nother language and the same license code for licensing. Microsoft says that you can use the same code for 8.1. If you don't know if you have windows 8 or 8 pro you can check by right clicking on computer an chuse properties, under "Windows edition" it will say "Windows 8 SL" and "Windows 8" for the regular version or "Windows 8 PRO SL" and "Windows 8 PRO" for the PRO version, obviously.
