Windows 7 Welcome screen freezes after Windows Update

Hi.

For some time now that whenever I install new updates on my Windows 7 (Ultimate 64-bit), the system freezes in the welcome screen after reboot. The screen shows up but both mouse and keyboard are useless. Problem is fixed after I restart the system and choose the last known good configuration option in boot screen. After that, Windows boots normally and works fine.. Funny thing is that the new updates show up as installed.

Any ideas why the welcome screen freezes?

Thanks,

JP

Answer

Hi JP,

Sounds like the issue is related to hardware (or drivers) to me

As I understand the computer freezes at startup for the first time after (during) installing updates and subsequent reboots are fine without any system hangs and now the computer is working fine as expected (booting to last known good configuration).

Step 1: Download and install the latest drivers for mouse and key board from the manufacturer’s website.

Peripheral devices connected to the computer might conflict,

Step 2: Disconnect all the external devices (printers, scanner, USB (universal serial bus) drives, etc...)  Except mouse and the keyboard and then boot\start up

If this corrects the issue then add the devices back one at a time until you discover the piece of hardware causing the issue.  Then get any updated drivers\software for the device.

Try using the Performance troubleshooter to automatically find and fix problems.
