How to drag a shortcut onto the taskbar in Windows 7?

I was previously able in XP to create shortcut for a network Drive onto the desktop and then create an Icon with an icon drawing program for the letter associated with that drive (e.g. P for Projects, F for Finance, etc.) and associate that icon with the shortcut.  Then I could drag and drop that shortcut right onto the taskbar and voila - a big letter indicating the network drive that I could then single click to my desired drive.  It was simple, fast and convenient.  Now, in Windows 7, I cannot drag and drop this shortcut onto the taskbar.  Anybody know of a workaround?
