Windows 10 Update Wiped Hard Drive

When I saw a forced Windows update, I assumed it was a minor security update and not the one that it pretty obviously was. My bad, I assumed that Windows update would actually automatically check before it processed with installing anything given the sheer number of issues these updates have had over the years. I'd just wanted to go to sleep and yet I was forced to install this garbage.

I'd been diligently backing up my computer in both an external hard drive and my Google drive so nothing of importance was lost, but that hard drive backup might just be my documents and not a Windows restore partition.

What's the easiest way to restore Windows, if I decide to?

What's keeping this from happening again with a future update? And will M$ FINALLY let me shut down without installing updates?

And the biggest question of all: Should I bother? I've got a live USB of Peppermint Linux ready to go. sudo apt-get install a decent <Removed for TOU/COC violation> operating system.

Hi Leon, I think version 1809 has installed on your System somehow, it must have downloaded previously and was sitting there waiting to install

Microsoft have pulled that update, it is no longer available on the download page and has been removed from Windows Update, a bug was found in that update, where for some users, all the users files were deleted and were not recoverable.

I am really glad to hear you had a backup, most users don't !

See if you can roll back that update, rolling back will not restore your files, but it should put your system in a more stable condition . ..

Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

Do this twice

On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt . . . etc.

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Revert to previous build of Windows
