Invisible icons on taskbar - Windows 10

Hello,

Im having quite a bit of trouble with fixing my friend's pc.

Some of the icons on the taskbar are invisible - they're still pinned and there, but there is no 'image'. From what I know it's only windows icons, ex. Edge, mail and store.

I have tried sfc / scannow, as well as DISM in command. I have also tried to delete the  IconCache.db in AppData.

I wanted to try and restore the system back to before she did an update around the start of December 2017 (the error occured a bit after she updated in December) but I am only able to restore back to 8/01-18 and i believe that solves nothing, considering it came after the december update.

Anybody know what else i can do ? I'm beginning to get a bit lost.

Specs:
She's running on Windows 10 Home and has the newest update.

Her laptop is a Lenovo ideapad 720S-14IKB

Run the Start menu troubleshooter:

http://aka.ms/diag_StartMenu

If that does not work:

Press Windows key + X
Click Task Manager
Select the Processes tab
Scroll down to Windows Explorer then select it
Click Restart

If that does not work:

uninstall your display driver:

Press Windows key + X
Click Device Manager
Expand Display adapters
Right click the current display adapter
Click Uninstall
Exit Device Manager
Restart

Try rebuilding the icon cache

TO MANUALLY REBUILD THE ICON CACHE USING THE COMMAND PROMPT
https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-ico...
I (Ron) have successfully used this tip on Win10

1. Close and save anything that you are working on. This command will kill explorer and restart the computer when completed.

2. Open a command prompt in Windows 7 or Windows 8.

3. In the command prompt, Copy and paste each command line below exactly as is one at a time and press enter after each command.
WARNING: The last command will restart the computer, so be sure to close and save anything that you are working on first.
NOTE: the second command will kill explorer so your taskbar and all desktop icons will disappear, not to worry!

ie4uinit.exe -ClearIconCache
taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
DEL "%localappdata%\IconCache.db" /A
DEL "%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\iconcache*" /A
shutdown /r /f /t 00

4. The IconCache.db file has now been rebuilt.

5. If the icons are still not displaying properly, then download and merge the ICO option in this tutorial for Windows 7 or Windows 8 to restore the default associations of .ico (icon) files.

Hi, thanks for answering

The start menu troubleshooter told me that the ''field data base'' was corrupted, but it could not be fixed ?

Any ideas on that?

I've tried the others and everything else didn't work.

Hi, thank you for answering !

I tried to manually rebuild the icons as described in your post, but this too did not work..

The above answers didnt work either, sadly.

Do you have more ideas?

you mentioned an error message after running a trouble shooter. Run it again, and give us the FULL and EXACT error message text, and error code (if any). We use them to search for solutions so approximations don't work well.

Now I'm digging deep for any icon related problems and fixes

Hmm, so I ran the troubleshooter again and now it says that no problem was found with the field data base (which was the problem last time), even though it said it didn't fix it the last time I ran it?

Sorry, I'm pretty sure there was no code to it though, I recall it simply only saying that it was corrupted but it doesn't seem to be that anymore according to the second run?

Thank you for helping me

(this is btw what it looks like)

Try these first to see if they work:

Open Start, type: CMD
Right click CMD
Click Run as administrator

Type in at the prompt OR Copy and Paste these one at a time : (Hit enter after each)

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Also run the System File Checker utility:
Open Start, type: CMD
Right click CMD
Click Run as administrator

At the Command Prompt, type: sfc/scannow

This will check for any integrity violations

Restart your system

Sadly I have already done both of these, and none of them show any error nor do they help,

Thank you though

Yes, it is possible that a second run fixed the problem. That is something that has been noticed with other trouble shooters. My best guess is that they are able to fix one problem in the first run, but not the second problem. Then in the subsequent run they can fix the remaining problem ...

So, did that second run fix your problem?
