Subtitles in videos in Windows 10.

I've got some mkv videos with internal subtitles. In Windows 8.1 these files played smoothly with the subtitles in Windows Media Player. Now in Windows 10 some of them don't show the subtitles. Not only Windows Media Player, the new video app does not show the subtitles either. This new app shows an option for activating captions but when I press it it crashes. What can I do?

I've noted that the codec icons don't appear anymore when opening these mkvs.

You have to play the video file in Video app. Then while you watch the video, you have to right click on the video to get “Playback Option”.

 Note: You will get subtitles only if the video has it.

I think he meant playing subtitles with video files in the new Movie & TV app for windows 10. There is no right click function for a playback option but in windows 8.1 there was. This is something I'm concerned about as well, my wife is not an English speaker so all our movies need subtitles. Is there a solution for this?

To clarify the scenario, I think most users would have a separate mkv (or other) video file and a matching "srt" subtitle file. The bug is that neither the old Windows Media Player or the new Videos app is picking up the subtitle files on Windows 10. (The subtitle file should have the same name as the video file, except for the extension, of course). This has worked in all previous versions of Windows and media players. I tried it with mkv files only so far, not sure about the other formats.

Tip until Microsoft fixes the bug: install media player classic (bing MPC-HC), that one works as expected.

Rakesh. There is not a "Video" app, there is a Movies & TV, as samblaze says. And Right clicking it does not show anything.

Mic414, in my case there is no .srt, the subtitles are into the .mkv file. Some of them show just fine, other do not.

In my case I nave .mp4 video files and .srt subtitle files but when reproducing using the TV & Movies app the subtitles are not displayed

I "Solved" it using Media Player Classic. I mean, it's not a real solution, I like the new video app, but it's discouraging when it doesn't read the subtitles of half of the videos well.

Rakesh , do you know what we are talking about??? , we are talking about that App named (Windows DVD Player -Movie & TV ) it comes with windows 10 - was not exist before upgrading - , also App comes without sitting, tools , preference , even no right click or left click . to open the App you have to double click on the movie to play and when it played not showing any format of subtitles (.srt,.vtt,.****) . hope this clearing our problem with this App (windows DVD Player ) and windows 10 .

I fixed in K-Lite Codec Tweak Tool:

Codec Tweak Tool > Media Foundation > disable for .mp4 and .mkv

Now subtitles work fine!

Thanks for the solution chrispale. It worked for me (Windows Media Player 12).

In order to work please note that you need external .mkv codecs. I used XP-codec pack and installed only "Matroska" codecs.
