The format of the email address isn't correct?

Whenever I attempt to send an email to my wife's email account from my @hotmail.com email account I get the following error message:

The format of the email address isn't correct. A correct address looks like this: *** Email address is removed for privacy ***. Please check the recipient's email address and try to resend the message.

My wife's email address is indeed valid.  I can send to it from all of my other email addresses including my @microsoft.com email address.  Why is this happening?
