Sharing connection between PC and Xbox to get on internet in University Halls

Hi again, recently i posted about having problems getting on the internet on my xbox at University Halls.  The halls networking runs through a proxy server and they have not introduced wireless in the flats.

Okay so what I have is im connecting my laptop using ethernet into a port into the wall and connecting my xbox 360 to my laptop also through ethernet.  What i'm trying to do is share my connection between my PC and xbox as recommended by a very helpful guy on the forums.  My xbox can get into onto the network but it can't connect to the internet and always gets stuck at this stage.  I'm just unsure what settings to change in the Network and Sharing Centre (Vista) on my laptop so i can let my xbox on the internet.  Also the university have told me xbox 360 ports are open.

Just to add, i've looked at one of the guides of the two methods of either sharing or bridging, just neither seem to work, unless im doing some wrong which is possible :P

Hi there, i've tried the guide for both sharing and bridging but still struggling to get on the internet on my xbox.  I can get on the network though.

I do take your guides work for using 2 ethernet cables and not internet sharing through wireless?

They do yes, for both. Its ICS you want not bridging, so when using sharing what happens what does it fail on?

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.

Okay thanks.  Well on the xbox when i try the test it can connect to the network no problem.  But it fails from Network --> Internet.  When im on my laptop (vista).  On the network and sharing centre I have two local area networks.  One for my internet connection and the other for the connection to my xbox.  And when i try to do the ICS i enable the two options on the internet connection but i get another option which is something about selecting a Private Home network which wasn't in your video which could have something to do with it?

That shouldn't really matter no, if its failing on the network to internet part of the test either your laptop has a firewall that is blocking it (maybe Norton/Zonealarm/ESET etc etc, it won't be the Windows firewall) or the Uni is blocking Xbox live traffic.

Its quite likely to be the Uni, do you know of anyone else that uses live on the Uni network? Its very common for them to block this type of traffic

Well I have avast anti-virus on my laptop.

Alright well i went to the IT Helpdesk and asked if they were blocking it but they said they started opening pretty much everything to do with leisure (Skype etc) and the guy said that the ports should be open but I can ask again if they are blocking traffic.  Unfortunately I don't know anyone else that uses it here :/

You can see if the ports are open by using this on your PC:-

portforward.com/.../portcheck.htm

The ports you need to check/have open are:-

I downloaded the Port checker and put in all the ports and got...

External IP Address: We were not able to determine your external IP

Ping Result: We were unable to ping your router

Port Check Result: Could not connect to the portforward.com.  Your port is not open or is not reachable

Yeah wondered if that would happen, its because you are behind your Uni firewall I'm sure it will be the Uni's network blocking you
