Save Issue

I'll get straight to the point:

Every time I start a new game with Mass Effect 2, it resets itself. This has been going on for a long time, and I thought it was due to the face that I don't usually play the game online when I'm at home. I've beaten the game, so no worries there, but after the first few times I beat the game, I started to notice that some of my achievements were gone; almost like I never did them. I find that hard to believe because a lot of the achievements that were missing are hard to not get since you have to recruit the majority of the characters you run by to get the achievements. I can't tell you how many times I've played this game over and it still won't give me the last achievement for completeing the game twice.

I'm only concerned that there is something actually wrong with the xbox since it won't save my data either. I completed the game about three months ago and only recently (in the past two weeks) tried to start a new game to see if I could get the achievements back and maybe the problem would fix itself. It didn't; my save data is gone and it reset itself to after I completed the game.

I will state that i have downloaded a lot of the content that goes with the game, so I'm not sure if that has something to do with it, but that's my issue. Unfortunately, that is not the only game that has been affected in that way. I have a few other games that do the same thing, and all my save data keeps disappearing and my achievements are missing with the save data. Since my save data is messed up then my gamer points keep getting reset as well.

Even when you look on my profile and view my achievements for ME2, you will see where I have some of the achievements for the end of the game, but not from the beginning. I understand that it could be mistaken for me restarting the game, but I know that's not the issue.

Sorry for the long winded question, but I just want to know what's wrong with my xbox; it pretty much runs fine other than the save data, and I don't like playing it recently because I have to play through the game again without being able to get to the end of the game.

Did you ever recover your GamerTag on another Console?

To me it sounds like your Profile somehow got corrupted, I would copy saved games data on a USB and reset your xbox360, then recover your GamerTag and then save the games data back on your 360.

I have recovered my GamerTag on another console, but would that really mess up the profile that bad?

But if I reset my console then wouldn't that delete all of the DLC I had on it before? I don't really want to have to pay for that stuff since there's a lot of DLC I have there.

From the Xbox Support page:

"Do not recover your gamertag to a friend's console as a convenience. You might lose your saved games."

support.xbox.com/.../gamer-profile.aspx

I wouldn't go so far as to "Reset my console," but you may want to check your profile to see if it is corrupted.  On your Dashboard find: My XBox > System Settings > Memory.  If you see a yellow triangle with an "!" inside of it, your profile is corrupt.  You should delete your profile (ONLY YOUR PROFILE) and then recover it.

Any DLC you have previously downloaded is yours for the life of your account and will not need to be paid for again.  You can find a list of your DLC in your Download History and you can re-download it from there if necessary.

Did you get those achievements while you were disconnected from XBL?

I've never seen anything like that when I was looking at my memory to see if the data was corrupt. Even if recovering my gamertag was the problem, it wasn't this bad when I was in the US and I moved my gamertag from my console to my sister's console.

I did check again to make sure I didn't see the caution, but it's not there. So it's either a deeper issue or that caution icon isn't showing up for it. So it'd basically getting to the point that I'll probably have to reset or send my xbox in, then?

If it's not a good idea to recover my gamertag on a different console, then why give the option in the first place? I only did it to get my friends and family to sign up for XBL so we can play together and that was the only option they were comfortable with.

@VernirSlake: I didn't see your response before posting, but to answer your question, yes. When ME2 came out, I was out to sea with my ship and I figured I'd take my xbox with me. I was gone for over a year and a half and I wasn't able to connect my xbox with XBL till I got back to the states. When I got back I had to do a massive update on my console and that's when they switched to the new dashboard. After the update, we have to set sail and I was gone for another six months before I was able to update my console.

Since then it's been acting weird.

"Recovery" was designed for the purpose of replacing things such as a corrupted profile.  If you need to move your profile around it's best to keep it on a storage device like a USB flash drive.  You'd be amazed what can happen to your profile in between the time it's been recovered to another machine and it getting back to your machine.  There are many horror stories about it in the Accounts Suspensions and Console Bans forums.

Anyway, did you try deleting and recovering it?  This is much easier and less invasive than resetting or sending your console in, especially if there isn't anything wrong with it.

That'll be the problem then. When you recovered your GT XBL downloaded the last record it had of your account from when you last connected to XBL which also didn't have the achievements you got while out at sea. As such the service wasn't aware of you getting those achievements and scrubbed them. Your only option is to do them again which is either a blessing or curse depending on how you view ME2.

@Knowitall: I'll try that because I would hate to have to ship my xbox all the way to the states just o get the thing looked at; it that were the case it's easier to just buy a new one. I just figure there's nothing wrong except it's having issues with the save option.

@VernierSlake: Let's say that might be the case, before I got an XBL account I played my other game on my xbox and they all updated with my account when I logged online; so that would still make it suspicious that it wouldn't transfer over to my XBL account.

ME2 is one of the few games that I don't mind playing many times over, but since I know I'm getting ME3, I don't want to get shortchanged when I buy the game and I can't even use the save data that I currently have on my xbox. That's a -lot- of hours that would go to waste if this issue isn't cleared up by then.

I will check this forum again later but it is late for me and I have work in four hours, but I'll try it and get back to you.

As VernierSlake said in his last post.

I think this from the Support page confirms what he's saying:

Recover your gamertag from Xbox LIVE

You might need to recover an Xbox LIVE gamertag in the following situations:

   * You have a Zune or Games for Windows — LIVE account and want to join Xbox LIVE.

   * You accidentally deleted your profile, or you want to move your profile to a new console.

Important

   * Any achievements or changes that you have made since the account last connected to Xbox LIVE will be lost during the recovery process.

That'll have been because you promoted your offline account and since that'll have been the first record the service had of your account nothing would've been overwritten.
