Fan is running on full speed during download or high network traffic (Neverwinter online)

Hi @all,

I have a question about the cooling fan of the Xbox One.
During normal gameplay the fan is always silent. Even when playing heavy games like Far Cry 4 or GTA V.

But as soon as I am downloading a game / updating game data or playing online, like Neverwinter, the fan turn on and is running on full speed.

As the console is quite during normal games, even when playing more than 4 hours, I am pretty sure that this issue is not related to general heat problems – it seems to be related to the network card / Wifi module.

Anyone facing similar issues or should I request a repair of my Xbox?

Regards,
Carmi

Hi Carminibus,

Thanks for using the Community Forums!

Have you tried holding the power button on your console for 10 seconds to power-cycle it and see if you still experience fan issues?

A factory reset may also be worth trying, which can be done from Settings.

However, if neither of those fixes the issue, you may have a hardware problem, as you mentioned with the WiFi module. In this case, you can register your console on myservice.xbox.com and request a repair - which is free-of-charge if you're still within Warranty.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Hi Jackah,

thx for your quick reply. Shutting down or restarting does not solve the problem.

Even when the Xbox is turned of/ on standby since a couple of hours/days, if there is an update in the background the fan does start to run on full speed.

Not sure which effect a factory reset should have. The console is running since Dec 2014 which means a couple of update were installed. So the question which setting (which would be resetted) can cause such a behaviour?

When I request a repair, do I need to prove somehow the issue? Because I wonder how I could do that...

Regards,

Marian

Hi Marian,

You don't need to prove the issue.

After requesting a repair, you'll print off a delivery label, UPS will come to collect your console, and the Service Centre will check for the issue (referencing the original order notes) and look at what the issue is.
