Disc Read Errors

If you send the console off to MS to be repaired you dont need to send the HD, just the console. sounds like the DVD Drive is on its way out...if its doing it with multiple discs then its a tell tale sign its going to pack up soon. If you can get the point of purchase to replace it then go for it, but sending it off to MS will take at minimum a couple of weeks to get to them and back to you. Sounds like every reason to go ahead and pre-order that GoW3 Console my friend...get a full new warranty on a new spec machine

You could try the disc drive wizard before sending it off support.xbox.com/.../disc-drive-wizard.aspx

Before you send it back to MS, make sure the DVD drive has totally stopped working because when they power it up at the factory if it works they will just box it up & sends it straight back to you, they wont do a diagnostic test. Ive sent 3 console back, the first one took 2 weeks but I had the others back in 5 days. If you can take it back to where you purchased it Id do that. If its under a year old dont let them fob you off by saying you have to send it back to MS.

Take it too the shop if its new, you can just swap it over and keep your hard rive then.

When my Disc Drive broke I sent it back to Game via their insurance policy. Got a fixed console back in about 5-6 days.

If the console is within the year's warranty, just take it back to the shop and say it's not working. I did this when my first console died, and I had it replaced within 15 minutes. Microsoft could not compete with that turn-around. ;)

I bought a dvd disc cleaner from Tescos for about £6 when I got disc read errors, never had the issue since, that was 6 months ago

Cheers for the replies; the wife got it from Littlewoods and the option of taking it back to the shop is out off the question until we give them a call; either way its going to have to get sent away and to be honest i'd rather send it directly to MS so i can track it etc. I may try the disc cleaner from Tesco and try it out for another few days. At the mo no discs are getting marked but don't want them to do so in the future.

Interestingly enough the use of a lens cleaner is against the console warranty, though how they'd ever find out I don't know.

DC i see from that link it says to clear the system cache; i'll do that in the morning and try a few discs; can't be bothered looking at the wee fecker at the mo to do anything with it apart from throwing it out off the window!
