Hi Jesamine,
· What is the make and model of the keyboard/computer?
· Have you made any changes on the computer prior to the issue?
· Do you get any error message?
· When are you getting the blue screen error message?
· What is the complete blue screen error message?
Follow these methods.
Method 1: Perform a scan using Microsoft safety scanner.
http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.
Method 2: Follow these steps:
Step 1: Boot the computer in safe mode and check if the issue persists.
Step 2: If the issue does not persists in safe mode, perform a Clean Boot to see if there is any software conflict as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts.
Note: After performing the troubleshooting steps in clean boot, follow Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state section from the link to return the computer to Normal startup mode.
After you used the clean boot to resolve the problem, you can follow these steps to configure Windows XP to start normally.
a) Click Start, run.
b) Type msconfig, and then click OK.
c) The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.
d) Click the General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
e) When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.
Method 3: Update the latest drivers/software for the keyboard.

* *Please note that I cannot boot the computer in Safe Mode, as you suggested because nothing happens when I press the arrow keys or Enter, so I have to manually switch off and boot normally. Right now I would like to be able to select the Last Known Good Configuration option from the Windows Advanced Options menu too.**
Here are the answers to your questions:
What is the make and model of the keyboard/computer?
The computer is a Dell Dimension 8100 and the keyboard is a Dell Model SK-8115, which was a replacement for the original.....Dell advised that it was fully compatible with this computer.
Have you made any changes on the computer prior to the issue?
I developed a number of problems after downloading SP3 / Microsoft Updates, including the loss of use of Windows Installer (corrected by re-registration) and the Help and Support Center.
BSODs - Ran a GMER Rootkit Scanner.
Do you get any error message?
Yes
What is the complete blue screen error message?
I haven't taken full details of the error message, but it is SIMILAR to this:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.
Driver IRQL not less or equal. (that was there)
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer
for any Windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware
or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart
your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then
select Safe Mode.
When are you getting the blue screen error message?
On booting up. I ran a GMER Rootkit Scanner on the advice of another and had the first BSOD I have ever had towards the end of that and I have been intermittently having them at start up since. I have read that the GMER Rootkit Scanner can cause BSODs, particularly in older systems....if I had known that at the time I wouldn't have run it. Please note that I have now removed the GMER Rootkit Scanner.

Upload latest 3 files from there to Sky Drive then paste a link here and we will fix that all up.
As for the keyboard, you need to have it attached to the motherboard and not an add-on card, preferably in the rear of the machine.
Use a PS/2 keyboard to access the bios and set the legacy USB or legacy USB keyboard support to enabled and save.
-----
I just re-read....advise to wipe the hard drive clean with Killdisk then clean install Windows after.
If not, your system will forever remain compromised with good chance of malware to return, even after a normal format.

So I would need to buy a PS/2 keyboard? This is rather complicated for me....I normally pay a technician to work on my computer, but cannot afford to at present and I have no XP CD either.
How do I upload latest 3 files from C:\Windows\Minidump? I have not heard of Sky Drive - will have to look it up.

There is simply no way to tell the changes that the malware already did and can do in the future, short of analyzing every last bit of code.
So, your machine is potentially forever compromised because of it, if not using Killdisk to low-level format the drive.

You can upload anywhere else too, such as Rapidshare.
