The email address on the error notice is now not in use, although I was not sure at the time I sent the original message. Now the error message keeps occurring and I cannot find a way of deleting it for ever.

Your server may need authentification, try this:-

 

Open your mail server, click on the problem account, (if it didn't load automatically). Click 'Properties' and click on the 'servers' tab. Check the 'Log on using authenticated POP (APOP)' and then click 'settings'. In the 'settings section check the 'use same settings as my incoming server' then check 'my server requires authentification'. Click 'apply'.
