WIN8-No desktop, black screen with mouse pointer. Task manager and login screen work.

As usual I left my computer on and after few minutes it went to sleep. Next morning I moved the mouse, computer wakes up but I got just black screen with mouse pointer on it. I hit CTRL+Alt+Del and screen with Task Manager option showed up. I shut down computer and restarted it. Welcome screen and log-in appears. After I entered password and click submit the screen goes black with only mouse pointer visible. I did not install anything recently. Can you help me to get my desktop back?

Ok, I've had the same problem. I figured that if you have a pointer and can launch task manager and all programs through its File>Run new task, then the shell is working correctly. No desktop and no taskbar mean that something's wrong with explorer.exe. Now, it's not necessarily corrupted, may just not launched correctly.

Here's what I did:

1. I opened task manager, the Details tab

2. I killed all explorer.exe on the list

3. just to be sure I also tried killing dwm.exe but it might not be necessary (it never disappears)

4. I started new instance of explorer.exe via File>Run

And voila I got the desktop and the taskbar.

Hope it helps.
