Windows 8 is missing winload.efi and won't start up

Whenever I go to start up my computer after waiting about 10 minutes hp starts "automatic repair" it used to say it was missing winload, but now it says "A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed." Error Code 0xc0000185. The only thing I've recently messed with was change my options to where I don't have to press "fn" to use my function keys. Could anyone help?

Hi,

I would suggest you to insert the Windows 8  installation media and then follow these instructions:

a.     Click on Repair your computer.

b.    Click on Troubleshoot and then select Advanced Options.

c.     Click on Command prompt and type the following commands and press Enter after each command:

Bootrec /fixmbr

Bootrec /fixboot

Bootrec /rebuildbcd

d.    Restart the computer.

e.    Check if the issue persists.

Do get back and let us know the status of the issue, I will be glad to help you further. We, at Microsoft strive towards excellence.

Hi,

What is the make and model of the computer?

I would suggest you to create USB recovery drive from a working Windows 8 computer from the following link or contact your computer manufacturer for the recovery disc.

Create a USB recovery drive

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/create-usb-recovery-drive

Hope this helps!

I am having the same problem albeit with a different computer.  And it seems that Windows 8 is not a popular thing.  I am also in South Korea, where there isn't a lot of easy support solutions available in a language I can use.

Why is it that Microsoft has created a program that does indeed help create a rescue media USB stick, only to have option not work?

Why isn't there an installation of some sort on this site, or a repair media creation option available through Microsoft?

Why wasn't I told that in creating the password for the system, at the behest of Windows 8 with no obvious option to not create the password, I would be making it reather difficult for ANY repair recovery option, at least on my own?  Why is it that all options I have tried are blocked by the fact that I have that password on the computer?

I have downloaded a copy of Windows 8.1, put the iso on another USB stick, begun the recovery process, only to have the process tell me it can't do anything because of the password.

This is really frustrating and I am very disappointed in Microsoft at this point, particularly since I cannot talk to anyone live who might be able to answer questions in a timely and helpful manner.

I performed the above Bootrec commands and all of them indicated they were successful, however restarting the computer i am left with the same missing winload.efi error.  What do you suggest as next step?
