Error Message: Cannot import registry. Error accessing the registry

HELP!  I thought I covered my tracks by exporting my Windows 7 registry to an external hard drive while I "cleaned" the registry.  Well, the computer is acting funny, so I went to the file, double clicked it, and after a few moments got the above error message.

What could be wrong?  Was it a mistake to save it on an external hard drive?

I already tried to do a system restore, but the oldest restore I see available is after I messed with the registry.

Answer
The menu that F8 got me to was: Repair your computer (I've explained that), Safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, Enable boot logging, Engable low-resolution video, Last Known Good Configuration (advanced), Directory Services Restore mode, Debugging Mode, Disable autorestart on system failure, Disable driver signature enforcer, Start Windows normally

2. Select Repair from the menu that looks like this one:
   http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

As I mentioned before - this is advanced stuff. If you find it difficult to understand my explicit instructions then you should ask a computer-savvy friend to assist you.
