Windows 10 Mail not syncing

I hope someone can help me with this one.  I've looked at all the posts on this subject and none of them are helpful for me I'm afraid.  My email (Hotmail account) stopped syncing with Mail in Windows10 2 days ago.  Up until then it was working fine.  Now I just get a box appearing on the screen for the Outlook Account settings whenever I try to sync it.  I cannot change the sync settings as they are 'greyed out'.  Hope someone can assist with this.  It's driving me nuts!

Hi, Christine.

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. I understand the issue that you are facing currently, and we in Community will try to resolve your issue the best way we can.

Before we proceed further, could you please help me with the following information?

  1. Are you facing the sync issue only with hotmai?
  2. Is your version of Windows Mail App updated?

As of now, I would suggest that you add another email account to your mail app and check if the same issue is occurring. If the same issue persist then, update your mail app and check.

Also I would to suggest that you try to un-install and re-install Mail app. To do so follow the steps mentioned below.

  • Right click on the “Mail” application and select “Uninstall” option.
  • Once the “Mail” application is un-installed, press “Windows key + W”.
  • Select “Store” option from the list.
  • Type “Mail” without quotes in the search box.
  • You will find “Mail” application listed in the left panel.
  • Select “Mail” application and select “Install” option.
  • Once the “Mail” application is installed, check if this fixes the issue.

Your reply is very important for us to ensure a proper resolution. Please get back to us with the above information in order to assist you accordingly.

I'm facing something similar here for the past week. My Windows 10 Mail shows my inbox with all mails but when I click on a mail, it doesn't display the body of the message.

I had an earlier problem where my emails showed in full but I wasn't able to download any attachment. Now, I can't even read any mail. If I click on any email, it just says "Download message and pictures". I click on the "download..." but nothing happens.

I have tried syncing but it takes forever (even when I set it to download mail from the last 7 days). After 'syncing' for 20 minutes, nothing happens.

I have tried deleting and reinstalling the gmail account but it doesn't change anything.

I added another email account (a Yahoo account) and ran into the same issues: "Download message and pictures".

It's strange that no one else seems to have this problem. It's a bit of a drag to keep signing into Gmail or Yahoo! every time I want to access my mails, but it seems to be the only option right now.

PS. I followed Vanessa Sohtun's suggestion and tried to uninstall the Mail application by right-clicking. There was no uninstall option anywhere.

Hi Vanessa

I do not have any other email accounts linked only Hotmail and it was working just fine before.  I could try another email but I know that won't be the problem.

Updating app - It is up to date.

You cannot uninstall "Mail" by simply right clicking on it - this is not an option

Just a question:  Have you ever tried to uninstall he "Mail" app in Windows 10? If you try it you will probably find that it cannot be done.

I signed up for Windows 10 as an update to 8.1 so it used my Outlook account and automatically used my Hotmail account so I cannot just simply delete anything.

The last option would be do uninstall Windows10 altogether and reinstall, but this would be such a pain.

I'll keep working on this and let you know if I solve it.

Thanks anyway

Regards

Hi again Vanessa

I found another post that allowed me to uninstall the Mail app (I'll copy it in below).  However, when I download it from the Store again I still have the same issue - it won't sync.  It restores the emails that were there previously but the option to sync is still dimmed.

I did this twice with the same result.  I will keep on trying and get back to you if I solve it.  I'd appreciate it if anyone else can assist with this persistent issue.

Here is the other post I found which will uninstall the Mail app:

Hi,

Thanks for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As per you query, I like to inform you that; when you remove Windows Mail app the Windows calendar app will also get removed.

However, you need to reinstall Windows Calendar app from Windows store.

Follow the below steps;

1) Open the Start menu, type Windows PowerShell in the search bar.

2) Right click on the Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.

3) Enter the below command to reinstall the Mail and calendar app.

   get-appxpackage *microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps* | remove-appxpackage

Note: By running the above commands, Windows Calendar app will also get removed.

Hope it helps, reply to us with the status of your issue. We will be happy to assist you.

Hi again

After trying to resolve this issue I have now decided to give up on it.  It has taken up far too much time.  My feedback is that the Mail app is very clunky and it seems that many people have issues with it either not syncing or not syncing correctly or in my case stopping altogether.

Even after uninstalling and reinstalling several times the app tries to sync but then falls over and provides me with the options box where I can change my settings, but as was the original problem, the option to change the sync occurrences is greyed out.

I've decided to just go back to accessing my Outlook/Hotmail the way I've always done it.  There are many more actions I can perform there.  One of the big issues I've found is that even when my mail was syncing, when I deleted emails from the app they were not deleted from my Hotmail account so I now have to go back and sort through those I don't wish to keep etc.  More housekeeping!

Anyhow, if someone does eventually create a patch to fix all the bugs I might give it another try, but for now Mail app is a fail for me.

With best wishes

Christine

Hi there

It seems from all of the posts I have read that if the app is presented with more than one account it cannot cope.  You'll see below some instructions I've posted that show how to uninstall the app.  You'll have to reinstall from the Store though.

If you haven't already done so you'll also need to make sure that your System settings for 'Notifications and Actions' have the mail and calendar apps turned 'on'.  Accessed by clicking on the Windows icon in the top right hand corner.

Good luck with it - hope you have more than I did!

Kind regards

Christine

I have a very similar problem. Trying to sync mail. Mail asks for my email and password.

Mail accepts these and tells me all is ok. When I sync no emails are found. I have an ipad and when I set up that up with the same email and password it works fine. If I want to view emails on my laptop I now have to access them on my email provider's web site. It all worked fine on win8.1.

You can use powershell command to uninstall "mail and calendar" (both are combined in app section).

Type "poweshell" in search box

Right click on "Windows Powershell" and choose "run as adminstrator"

copy and paste the below command in poweshell prompt and then enter

Get-AppxPackage *windowscommunicationsapps* | Remove-AppxPackage

restart pc

now you can go back to Windows Store and re-install this "mail and calendar" app

you'll find it under Settings-my library-apps
