Hi,

Good Day!

Thank you for that information. Please know that all Skype for Linux version 4.3 and older will retired. With that to have continues using of Skype, people are advised to install the latest version of Skype for Linux.

Here’s just a few of the great things you can do when you download Skype for Linux:

  • Free Skype-to-Skype calls.
  • Video calls your contacts.
  • Free instant messages to your friends, family and colleagues.

You can continue to help by providing feedback on your Skype for Linux Beta experience. You can send feedback, go to this link: https://feedback.skype.com/

It will much appreciated.

Thank you!

Not here...

Skype v4.3 for Linux copes quite well with low bandwidth connections, pixelated video calls on low bandwidth connections, with separate chat window enabling chat conversations independent of the video call with video call contact & other Skype accounts.  Frequently, pretty well every call, do this with Skype.

v5.3 on low bandwidth connections (wifi issue other end) shows spinning trying to connect icon that:

prevents terminating call

offers no call, audio or video, for bandwidth levels that v4.3 offers video calls (even though pixelated, but pixelated is infinitely better than no call!)

does not offer chat discussion when insufficient bandwidth for calls.

It is not incompatibility, as have on a few occasions had a very brief video call, until the trying to connect logo buts in.

v5.3 is ineffective as a communication platform, offers no contact options at bandwidth levels that v4.3 works acceptably well.  I have tried on many occasions in my other Skype accounts, and have been effectively unable to communicate with v5.3, whilst v4.3 offers satisfactory communication.

The latest version of Skype, Beta 5.3, is a serious downgrade of effectiveness to near enough zero (or about 80%+ reduction in features & controllability, with a similar downgrade in connectivity, no problem with FTTC here, but weak connection other end kills the calls)) here on i5 4GB RAM Ubuntu 14.04 ....

To be honest, with the difference in capability between 4.3 and Skype for Linux Beta, with multiple threads running and significant CPU occupancy, I am now thinking this is an effort to kill Linux support for the product. Skype for Linux Beta is so far from product ready, there can be no other conclusion. Many, like me, have paid subscriptions and a telephone number used for business. Changing that would be a significant effort. But it appears I need to do that.

A proper roll-out of a new architecture would provide the same capability and similar computing footprint to the existing, old product. But this is far from ready. It will essentially drive Linux user to other applications, and relieve Microsoft from supporting the product. I am looking, now, at this as the death-knell of Skype on Linux. Too bad they decided web was good. Too bad they abandoned small business. I guess we need to plan to move-on.

It is now 1 week until the stable feature rich version of Linux Skype is going to be replaced by the feature poor, buggy, skeleton version of Skype Beta 5.3.

Is there any indication that Microsoft are continuing with this process of ignoring the many requests from users for features that bring Linux Skype near to the feature set of Skype for other computing systems, or are the Linux users being ignored completely?

At least please postpone v4.3's retirement until the feature set on v5.3 offers a hint of resemblance to other versions of Skype, and you have addressed the issue of the very poor performance on low bandwidth connections

Hi,

for me calling works but I'm not happy with the CPU usage of nearly 10%. This leads my fan to run all time.

I'm switching to Hangouts if this doesn't get resolved.
