Recently, my MS apps were "automatically" updated to 2016 as part of our Office 365 subscription. I now can't open my old Access database containing the MDB extension. I see that it is possible (and looks pretty easy from forum instructions) to convert
to the new ACCDB format. But none of the conversion instructions I find seem to fit with the options 2016 is giving me. In the help I found, it looks like "Database Enhancement" should come up when I try to open the MDB file, but I just get this error message:
"Unrecognized Database Format" followed by the file path and .mdb extension with no options other than OK and help (which wasn't that helpful). Will I need to roll back to 2010 to get the database conversion options?
Microsoft dropped support for databases in Access 97 and earlier .mdb format in Access 2013.
Access 2016 can still open databases in Access 2000 and Access 2002-2003 .mdb format without needing conversion.
One option is to convert the old databases to either Access 2000 .mdb format or to the new .accdb format on a computer that has Access 2010 or earlier, then transfer the converted databases to your computer with Access 2016.
Another option is the one you suggest - roll back to Access 2010, even if only temporarily, and convert the old databases. You can then upgrade to Access 2016 again.
