Thanks for the easy copy-paste, fixed my problem too!

OS Protected command I used (Elevated CMD prompt):
  • attrib +s +h D:\Temp /S /D /L

Hope that helps.

Perfect.

Did as when I moved the Users folder:
  • robocopy /copyall /mir /xj C:\$$PendingFiles D:\Temp\$$PendingFiles
  • rmdir /S /Q C:\$$PendingFiles
  • mklink /J C:\$$PendingFiles D:\Temp\$$PendingFiles
All this to preserve all the special permissions on the original folder.

After that it installed smoothly :-)

Now, all I need to figure out is how to apply the "Protected Operating System file"-flag so it doesn't show up in the file explorer.

Dude, worked like a charm - I had the same error message regarding the Volume Serial mismatch in the CBS.log file. Great! Thanks a bunch!

OMG! Finally!!!

I've been dancing with this issues for days, it finally installed after:
  • robocopy /copyall /mir /xj C:\$$PendingFiles D:\Temp\$$PendingFiles
  • rmdir /S /Q C:\$$PendingFiles
  • mklink /J C:\$$PendingFiles D:\Temp\$$PendingFiles
I suppose my issue was also related to my user profiles sitting at d:\users.

THANKS A LOT!!!

I have the same problem installing this update.
I have moved users data to G:\users on a HDD. However, the data for users\public and users\default are still on C:\users on a plain system SSD.
I have changed the users data destination folder as follows.
When the personalization screen appeared during Win8 installation (from scratch) I started Win8 in audit mode and changed data value in HKEY_local_machine/software/microsoft/windowsNT/CurrentVersion/profilelist/  to G:\users
Thereafter I rebooted and defined the profiles for admin and other users.
The profile list looks like this now

Question is can I use above mentioned command lines to solve the update installation problem?
Please note that I have moved users data the same way in an earlier WIN7 setup and NEVER had problems installing updates.
Thanks for your help

Jacob

Jacob, I think the solution for you is to revert "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\ProfilesDirectory" back to the default value (%SystemDrive%\Users) and the update installs smoothly. I detailed the problem earlier in this thread, so I won't repeat myself. The installer the update comes with is buggy.

We shouldn't have any problems if Microsoft stuck to their own rules. By the way, once you created the users on your system you can change the registry value back to default to avoid problems like this.

Thanks for your reply, Morci.
I didn't know that I could set this specific value back to default after I had created the desired profiles.
I now did do so and the hampered update installed without a problem.
So your hint has been very valuable (sic) indeed.
I do have to change this value again when I need to define an additional profile, have I.
Cheers, Jacob
PS.: As you might have noticed there is something missing in my previous post. This forum didn't take the snip-it image of my profile list I wanted to include. I wonder why??

Open an elevated command prompt (search for "cmd" and launch it by clicking "Run as Administrator") and issue the following command: mklink /D D:\Users\Default C:\Users\Default (replace "D:\Users" with the path in your ProfilesDirectory).

I tried this and got this response...  Cannot create a file when that file already exists

I'm way over my head... I know that on my previous Windows 7 install I used an SSD for a boot drive and I'm pretty sure my profiles are on E:  but not sure... can someone help a real newbie on this?

Thanks.

First thanks for fixing my problem!  Second, I know this is a little off subject but does anyone know if having the Users folder on D: and pointing Files from C: to D: is preventing flash from running on firefox?
