Windows Update Hangs

As of today 12 April 2016 Window 7 SP1 hangs in searching for updates.  Unlike other postings in 2015, their is no Orchestrator service in services.msc.  Prior to today Windows update was working fine.  Why is this happening?  Is there any other way to get these updates.  I have restarted the OS to no benefit.

Your solution is simply patience.  It is going to take many hours.  The more you try to fix it, the more likely you are going to make a mess of your Windows installation.  Best is to shut down hibernation/sleep functions, power up, start up before you go to be and look forward to seeing a list of updates to apply in the morning.

I have shutdown the PC and powered up again and still have the problem.  Letting it sit overnight is a doubtful solution to me, I will try again tomorrow.

Shutting down the system complicates the problem.  What do you have to lose?

I'm also having this problem. Will just leave it alone, as with last month's issue, and hope Microsoft will get it worked out.

I, too, am having this issue beginning only this afternoon (04/12/2016).  This morning Windows Update completed its check (no updates) without any problem.  When I manually ran a check this afternoon since it is "Patch Tuesday" the "checking for updates" has been running for over two hours and the applicable svchost.exe process is taking up 25% of my CPU.

Having same exact issue. Last month it took the most 10 minutes to show my updates. It has been 4 hours now and it is still "checking for updates". The service is running my CPU 50 %.

PATIENCE, is likely to yield the result you expect.  In this case patience means up to 12hours.

I never had to wait that long before so why should today be any different? The most I ever had it stall at "checking for updates" is about 15 minutes. It also never made my CPU go as high as today is. What is the reason for this "patience" when we never had to wait that long before. Hours? What is the reason for this happening?

It is going to take many hours.

How is that even remotely acceptable?
