Windows Media Player won't burn CDs

Hi. I have been burning CDs with Windows Media Player for the past year. Suddenly, about two months ago, Windows Media Player started acting funny. When I tried to burn a CD, it only prepared the tracks and then said "burn complete", but did not actually burn the files to disc. So now I have been using iTunes and RealPlayer to burn my CDs. However, Windows Media Player has proven to be the fastest and most reliable at this: RealPlayer randomly crashes, and iTunes is just a pain to deal with. I really like WMP. Is there anything that can be done to fix this? Any idea of why it's happening in the first place?

1.       What is the exact error message?

 

I suggest you to try the steps provided and check if it helps.

 

Step 1: Try to slow down the burning speed and check if it helps.

a.       Open Windows Media Player.

b.      Click on Tools.

c.       Click on Options.

d.      Click on Burn tab.

e.      Under Burn tab, change the speed.

 

Step 2: Disable error correction and check if it helps.

a.       In Windows Media Player, on the Tools menu, click Options.

b.      On the Devices tab, click Properties for the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that is being used.

c.       Remove the checkmark from Use error correction.

There is no error message at all. All it does is prepare the tracks and say "burn complete" without actually burning the files. Actually, when it's doing this, it says 50% complete by the time it has prepared half of the tracks.
Also, I have error correction already off and adjusting the burn speed did nothing.

You can try and reset Windows Media Player.

Uninstalling and Reinstalling the Windows Media Player:
Step 1.
Uninstalling the Windows Media Player:
1. Go to Start and in the search type "Turn Windows features On or Off".
2. Click on "Turn Windows features On or Off".
3. Browse to the Media Features and uncheck the mark in front of Windows Media Player.
4. Restart the computer
 
Step 2.
Reinstalling the Windows Media Player:
1. Go to Start and in the search type "Turn Windows features On or Off".
2. Click on "Turn Windows features On or Off".
3. Browse to the Media Features and place a check mark in front of Windows Media Player.
4. Restart the Computer.

 

If you are having trouble using Windows Media Player, try using the troubleshooter to see if that fixes the problem.

 

Open the Windows Media Player Settings troubleshooter by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Click View all, and then click Windows Media Player Settings.

Neither worked. Resetting Windows Media Player said it worked, but my custom settings were still there. I ran it as an Administrator, too.

I'm having the exact same problem except that it just started today! I've never had this problem before but I just finished recording an album and wanted to burn some copies of it - now I can't! Please help!

There should be... it can be hidden - either click 'organize' - 'layout' and from the dialogue box select 'show menu bar' - it will appear top left and includes 'tools', or alternatively if you do not want the menu bar on display right click in space on the very top blue bar (to the right of where it says library... etc.) - Ric.

no help yes it gets the menu up but what good does that do me still can't burn discs

I can only respond to what has been asked! I need to know what happens when you try to burn a disc before I can hope to offer more relevant advice. Often disc burning problems occur simply because the lens in the optical drive needs a clean.  Does your pc load rip and play CD's no problem? If none of these operations are functional then the optical drive may indeed need cleaning or even replacing - or there may be some kind of systemic issue, but more specific info will help. - R.
