I'm prompted to download an update when I insert new game disc.

We followed the answer to a similar question and cleaned the cache.  Still have the problem with two games TLOR -Third Age and also Kingdom Under Fire -Heroes - it tells us we need an update to play these games  but it doesn't give us the option to update - even though we are connected to the internet - why doesn't it upgrade these game.

try to reinstall this games

These are both xbox originals aren't they?, do you have a hard drive?...

These games are on disk and as soon as we put the disk in it gives us the message - your console needs updates to play this game - and our only choice is ok  or  cancel - both send us back to reading the disk - no choice to do updates to console.

yes we have a hard drive.

How did you obtain your HDD? Did it come with the console? If so, was it puchased new?

We bought our XBOX 360 a few years ago brand new and it has a hard drive

Have you tried these games on a different Xbox 360, to see if the same issue occurs there, too?
