Cannot play Killer Instinct Local Versus w/ Two Gamertags logged in

I am trying to play Killer Instinct with my brother locally on the same Xbox one console. I have an Xbox live account and he had his own Xbox live account. On the 360, I could log into my Gamertag by pressing the center button on the controller and selecting my tag. He would then do the same and we could play two-player games together. He would get achievements on his name and I would get achievements on mine. This does not seem to work when trying to play KI together on the One. Either I can be logged in or him, but it is not letting BOTH of us log in at the same time. Does KI simply not allow both of us to be signed in for a versus match at the same time or am I doing something wrong?

Hey Befuddled,

Sorry to hear you're having issues with Killer Instinct.

  • What exactly is happening when you try to play together on Killer Instinct when you're both signed in?

If you're doing a Player v Player local match, it gives the stats to the player who launched the game but not the other player.

I'm having the same problem with killer instinct on my xbox one console. When I have both players signed in. I go to the versus menu, select player vs player. Player one will come up on the left. Then on it says press menu to join for player 2. But the 2nd controller will not tag in. I have turned off my console then switched controllers, same issue with the working controller. I know both controllers are good. I can fret o the home screen using both controllers.

For some reason killer instinct will not let the signed in 2nd player join the player vs player local battle.

I am also having the same issues exactly as described.  Trying to play Killer Instinct with my son but the console is not allowing the second controller to join the game.  Followed the same steps as above "local play --> player vs player --> and no way to have second controller work when it says press menu to join.

Tried it with my wife's profile and was also able to log my son in separately where I couldn't join his match.  He can also play the game on his profile so it isn't failing because he is a kid.

I paid $20 for this game but can't play locally...what gives?

I was having the same issue this weekend, first chance I had to try local play since I just got an extra controller for Christmas - I'll try DAVID A1969's solution tonight (as my Portal of Power was plugged in at the time) and let you know if that was the issue.

was having the exact same issue as all posted above, tried David A1969's suggestion and it worked.

Try:

Unplug portal of power for swapforce

Power Cycle the xbox one (hold power button till it shuts down completely, not in sleep mode)

On restart it should work.

thanks man!

Confirmed as well - for some reason Killer Instinct thinks the Skylanders Portal of Power is the second controller and does not allow an additional controller to be recognized. Once I unplugged it I was able to get local play to work properly.

I am having the same issue and I have no idea what the portal of power is. We both have our gamer tags on the Xbox One because we live in the same house yet when we are in the versus mode screen only one gamer tag shows up  and that's for player one.  Player two has to play naked so to speak
