Cannot find start button or task bar (Windows XP)

I cannot find the start button or taskbar on my computer.   I was running antivirus program and in the process must have hidden these.  How can I unhide since I cannot get to start menu or Control panel.  Cannot access by pressing ESC or in Safe mode.

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL (task manager) and click File new task(run) Explorer.exe and see what happens (your desktop should open with the startbar and icons)
