Unable to get past Windows 8 lock screen

I think Windows 8 thinks I'm on a tablet rather than a laptop PC, so i can't get past the lock screen.  I just bought this laptop yesterday, which was pre-installed with Windows 8.  Initially, I was able to hit any key on my keyboard to get from the lock screen to the login screen, but now, when I hit a key on my keyboard or click/swipe my mouse nothing happens...at all.  I can't even get to my login screen, so there is no way for me to change settings to bypass the lock screen in the future.  My keyboard is working because I'm still able to increase volume and brightness settings, so the keyboard doesn't seem to be the issue.  I should also mention that the problem did not begin until I rebooted my system for the latest Windows update...before that everything was working fine.  I've tried everything  I can do, but considering I can't log into my system, my options are very limited.  Like I said, it seems like Windows 8 thinks I'm on a tablet where I can utilize the touch screen to move through the lock screen, but there isn't a way for me to test my theory since I'm on a laptop that does not have touch screen capability.  Also, I can tell the lock screen is not "frozen" because the time updates consistently. Please help! I just bought this laptop yesterday and can't even use it.

So to summarize--here are ALL of the things I've tried, none of which have worked:

- Hit any and every key on my keyboard
- Swiped/clicked my mouse
- Pressed Alt+Ctrl+Del keys together
- Rebooted my system
- Removed the battery from laptop, then restarted it
- Tested my laptop keyboard to ensure its functional
- Attached my wireless keyboard and mouse--they both work fine on my desktop

If I'm missing some other troubleshooting possibility, please advise.  I don't know what else to do.

Thanks!

Hi

If the laptop is only one day old, I would recommend you take it back to the store where you purchased it or contact the laptops manufacturer and either request a warranty replacement or service.

I have this same problem

Does your BIOS setup screen still show?   Some don't even have that and have to connect another monitor to know what is going on.   Others have innovative methods of playing blind in order to get to the Advanced Options screen where VGA mode can be enabled.   That's assuming that their keyboard works, of course.   ;  )

If you are on the lock screen and you think your keyboard is working, try hitting Tab a few times (and make sure that your speakers are turned on.  <w>)

None of the keys that google tells me could bring me to the BIOS screen (F1, F2, etc) does anything. I guess I don't really know if my keyboard is working, but I can't imagine what would make the keyboard croak after just a few months. I don't know what hitting tab is meant to do, but it does nothing. I don't have external speakers.

Do you have anything else you can boot?  Otherwise you may have to press those keys before you  power on to try to get them loaded for the BIOS to see.   E.g. your BIOS boot options may be saying boot "quietly" which means try to boot from the first bootable device ASAP.   "Bootable device" may give you a workaround, again, depending on your settings.   E.g. having a bootable DVD, or USB stick, or floppy disc might give you enough time to get into your BIOS screen too.   Or at least boot something other than the problem partition.

I don't know what hitting tab is meant to do, but it does nothing. I don't have external speakers.

Then hitting Tab won't help.   Typically, after two presses you would have hit the Accessibility menu which would have let Narrator give you a clue about your location on the screen.   Then you could have enabled Narrator and let it guide you around in the darkness.   ;  )

Thanks for your thoughts, Robert. Four hours with Sony tech support and one full system recovery later, I'm back on my computer. Pretty hideous problem to get out of nowhere on a basically brand new computer. I think Windows 8 still has some problems.

This should bypass your problem. See answer below. Okay - this happened to me yesterday and I purchased a new laptop. After hitting several keys I was able to get past the lock screen and into my loving screen. Today it happened again and I almost sent this thing back in but I don't know if this is a glitch (which I'm sure it is) on Microsofts part. Here is the Fix: On your laptop, if you hit the right mouse button, the lock screen goes away and your login screen comes up. If after a minute or so you do not enter your password - it goes back to that lock screen again. Not sure what is up with this and it's totally idiotic but that's the fix. Right click button on your mouse area on keyboard. If this works for others, let me know - I'd like to know if at least one person got some helpful advice from this.

Try pressing esc when you boot your computer.  This will stop the boot and probably bring up the list of hot keys to use to access the BIOS.

Right Click Mouse Button does nothing for me... the Lock Screen goes away... the cursor start spinning, the screen goes black, then the Lock Screen comes back! Because the power button put machine to sleep and not a shutdown, I will have to run the machine out of power to do a full restart etc.
